NEW HAMPSHIRE, USA — More than 20 hikers were rescued from Mount Washington over the weekend after they were caught in freezing temperatures and high winds, authorities said.
According to New Hampshire State Park officials, the group was not properly equipped for the weather conditions on the summit, where temperatures had dropped below freezing and wind gusts were strong enough to create dangerous wind chills. Some of the hikers were suffering from hypothermia, officials said.
Crews used the Mount Washington Cog Railway to bring the group safely back to the base of the mountain.
State Parks had posted warnings ahead of the weekend, urging visitors to prepare for subfreezing temperatures and “blistering winds” at the summit.
