Members of the United Cajun Navy were deployed to Jamaica as the island braces for Hurricane Melissa, the most powerful storm to strike the island in history, marking the first time the volunteer group has provided aid outside of the United States.

In a social media post on Monday night, the organization said its teams were surveying neighborhoods, assessing potential needs and preparing to deliver aid once conditions allow.

"This is more than a weather event — it’s a humanitarian crisis unfolding in real time," the organization wrote. "With nearly 3 million residents in harm’s way, Jamaica will need the world’s help not just tonight, but in the long months of recovery to come."
