Not so long ago, I found myself thinking about this AL MVP race, and particularly how, in pretty remarkable ways, the productions from both Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh transcend the usual standard for this award. Whoever misses out on the award will do so with a historic season, and while it won’t be the first time this occurs — cases like Mike Trout’s runner-up seasons in the beginning of his career come to mind — there is a definite connection to make with what happened in the Bronx way back in 1961, a historic year for baseball’s biggest franchise.
