Independent Senator Lidia Thorpe has hit back at criticism of her apparent call to burn down Parliament House, saying her opponents had tried to "twist my words".
Senator Thorpe prompted outcry after she told a pro-Palestine protest: "If I have to burn down Parliament House to make a point... I am not there to make friends".
Australian Federal Police subsequently launched an investigation into the remarks, which critics claimed amounted to a threat against fellow politicians, staffers and parliamentary workers.
"Noting the public commentary and concern, the AFP is seeking to reassure the community that this issue is being appropriately considered and undertaken in a timely manner," an AFP spokesperson said earlier in October.
