Shadow industry minister Alex Hawke has labelled Labor’s ambitious Future Made in Australia program the “future bailed out in Australia” program as major manufacturers look for government handouts to avoid collapse.

The nation’s largest aluminium smelter, Rio Tinto’s Tomago operation in the Hunter Region, on Tuesday said it may not have a future beyond 2028 if it can not secure cheaper energy.

Tomago is now seeking billions of dollars to keep its operations afloat.

It follows Glencore receiving a $600m bailout as it struggles with energy prices at its Queensland site, while the Whyalla Steelworks in South Australia was handed $2.4b .

Mr Hawke said the government’s plan to power the nation’s industrial sector with green energy was proving to be a massive expense for taxpayers.
