LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Michigan House Democrats introduced a five-bill package on Tuesday to mitigate food access issues for residents at risk of losing SNAP benefits on Saturday due to the federal government shutdown.
States warned SNAP recipients this month that eligibility for food assistance could change in November, when the compliance requirements for the One Big Beautiful Bill kick in. The shutdown makes the situation even more severe, as benefits could end in November if it continues. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) told states to stop issuing benefits next month.
Republicans said that by opposing the GOP’s stopgap spending bill, Democrats are threatening undue harm to some of the country’s poorest people.
