KINGSTON, Jamaica ( WJHG /Gray News) - A newlywed couple is stuck in Jamaica just after celebrating their wedding as Hurricane Melissa bears down on the island.

With the airport now closed, there is no way off the island for residents or tourists. Jay Thomas and his new wife are among those left with no choice but to ride out the storm.

Thomas said there has been a “little bit of panic” among tourists, with a few near-fights breaking out. However, he notes the remarkable calm of Jamaican residents, whose serene demeanor is helping to ease the fears of visitors.

Thomas and his wife arrived for their wedding before the hurricane warnings intensified. Despite strong winds and rain attempting to disrupt their reception, they cherished their special moment of matrimony.
