OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) - The family of a high school senior killed while walking to her bus stop on Monday morning has launched a petition for road safety improvements.

Shannon Rushing, 18, was hit by a car while walking to her bus stop on Northwest Old Blitchton Road around 6:20 a.m. Officers are still investigating the cause of the crash and say the bus wasn’t present at the time.

Following the tragedy, Shanta Norton, Rushing’s sister and guardian, launched a change.org petition calling for state or national leaders to pass “Shannon’s Law.”

The road she died on lacks adequate lighting, sidewalks, and signage, the petition states. Norton argues that the infrastructure failures contributed to her death.
