LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - It’s a topic that education leaders say plagues every district across the country: chronic absenteeism. Tuesday, the superintendent for Kentucky’s largest said that Jefferson County Public Schools is trending in the right direction, but there is still work to be done.

One way the district said it is tackling the problem of kids missing class is by sending text messages to families. Last school year, the JCPS leaders said the district sent families 4.5 million text messages about attendance in an effort to improve communication.

“This is not just about missing a day or two of school here and there. That’s not what we’re talking about. It’s an educational barrier that must be addressed,” said Dr. Brian Yearwood, JCPS Superintendent.
