A shark feeding frenzy off a popular Gold Coast surfing beach has been captured in remarkable footage.

Dozens of the predators were lured by a bait ball - a large group of fish clustered together in a defensive formation - just metres off the shore at the famous Snapper Rocks.

Social media posts yesterday captured the sharks thrashing about as they chased their prey.

While hundreds of surfers usually ride waves at Snapper Rocks daily, the presence of the sharks plus overcast weather conditions meant most beachgoers remained on the sand watching on.

Except for one daredevil who paddled out, leaving onlookers amazed.

"Oh my god, the guy heading out. I wouldn't be swimming there today," one said.

Some fishers also tried their luck by dropping their lines in the water near the bait bal
