With millions of Americans on the verge of losing federal food aid, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott announced Tuesday that the city will provide more than $4.6 million in assistance for residents and local federal workers affected by the government shutdown.

“We are here today because the president and his allies in Congress do not care about the working people of this city or anywhere in America,” Scott said.

Scott said the money will go toward food, rental assistance, child care and hospital-based violence responders. He made the announcement at The Food Project, a nonprofit in Southwest Baltimore that provides free meals to residents.
