GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As Michigan families brace for the federal SNAP benefit pause starting Nov. 1, local organizations are stepping in to fill the gap.

United Way and the Fair Food Network are offering resources to keep food on the table and support the community.

“We are seeing a significant increase in call volume to 211, probably about triple what we normally see related to food events,” said Becki Postma, Chief Impact Officer at Heart of West Michigan United Way.

Thousands of Michigan families are calling for help, and United Way said their phones haven’t stopped ringing.

The nonprofit’s 211 helpline is connecting people to emergency food assistance, housing help and local resources across the state.
