KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (Island News) – Hawaii Island Police confirmed the death of a 3-week-old infant involved in a car crash on the Daniel K. Inouye Hwy last Thursday.

Police reported that 43-year-old Kimo Medeiros of Kurtistown attempted to overtake multiple vehicles on the highway, resulting in a head-on collision with another car carrying six people.

Among the occupants was a 47-year-old Anina Masaichy of Kailua-Kona, who was found unresponsive at the scene. The other passengers included a 4-year-old boy, a 17-year-old girl, an 18-year-old woman, and a 51-year-old man, all of whom suffered serious injuries.

Initially, Medeiros faced nine charges, but following the infant’s death, one of his negligent injury charges was classified as a second negligent homicide charge.
