SHREVEPORT, La. -- “We need police under the bridge.”

That plea from a downtown nightclub manager set off a tense exchange at City Hall at Monday's administrative council meeting. The comments were in response to a weekend fight in Shreveport’s Red River District which reignited debate over security in the city’s open-container zone.

Philip Price, who runs The G-Spot nightclub on Texas Street, told council members the altercation happened beneath the bridge -- not inside his business.

“We’ve been open a year and two months,” Price said. “This weekend was the first time there was an altercation and it wasn’t at the G-Spot. I’ve asked and asked for police presence down there. It’s the main street of Shreveport. We shouldn’t have to pay for police protection.”
