California joined 24 other states on Tuesday in filing a lawsuit against the Trump administration for suspending food stamps during the government shutdown.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the state filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Driving the news: The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) suspended Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November because of the shutdown, which started on Oct. 1.
The big picture: The lawsuit contends that the USDA has $6 billion in a contingency fund available to cover a large portion of the November SNAP benefits. • By sitting on that fund and not using the money, the USDA is breaking the Administrative Procedure Act, the lawsuit states.
