Several churches in the Greater Hartford area have large Jamaican populations and are taking the steps to prepare and assist the island in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
The hurricane made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane on Tuesday afternoon.

“There’s a lot of anticipation, a lot of fear, you know anxieties,” said Rehoboth Church of God elder Bertram Josephs. Josephs says he remembers the last time a storm of this magnitude battered Jamaica in 1988, when Hurricane Gilbert made landfall.
“It looks like it’s going to be even stronger,” he said. “They’re a lot of people here that would support Jamaica in whatever ways they need.”
