Commissioner Jeff Welborn will lead the Montana Public Service Commission after the commissioners voted on Tuesday for him to replace ousted President Brad Molnar.

Welborn, a former legislator in his first term as a commissioner, said until recently, he wasn’t expecting the role to become open, but he would accept the challenge.

Earlier this summer, Molnar announced he was under investigation internally for professional misconduct.

The PSC has been operating under duress at least since then, with a combative-at-times Molnar and an internal committee requesting his suspension by Gov. Greg Gianforte.

Last week, the Public Service Commission voted to vacate the office of president, unseating Molnar from the leadership post he took in January.
