The government shutdown is nearing the one-month mark, and its effects on communities in Northeast Florida have been well-documented.

And on Tuesday, a local pantry said its food services are running “dangerously low” as the impending cancellation of SNAP and WIC funds creates even more uncertainty about how families who rely on the government’s services will be able to keep their fridges stocked.

Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida said about 1,500 households a month have sought the organization’s assistance, and while it says needs were expected to grow as the holiday season approaches, the government shutdown has created even more demands.
