ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Georgia’s push to legalize sports betting faces new challenges after the state lawmaker who championed the effort announced his resignation.

State Rep. Marcus Wiedower said he is stepping down to focus on a separate business opportunity. Wiedower was first sworn into office in 2019 representing the 121st district.

Wiedower introduced two bills during this year’s legislative session that would have made sports betting legal in Georgia. One would have put the issue on a statewide ballot. Neither measure passed.

It remains unclear how Wiedower’s resignation may impact future efforts to legalize sports betting in Georgia. Three other representatives also sponsored both pieces of legislation.
