Flood survivors in Anchorage are beginning to move out of temporary shelters and into hotel housing this week, marking an emotional milestone for families and volunteers alike.

“There were lots of hugs and tearful goodbyes from our volunteers who’ve really developed a relationship with some of our shelter residents,” said Taylar Sausen with the American Red Cross of Alaska.

For almost two weeks, families displaced by the remnants of ex-Typhoon Halong have been living at the Alaska Airlines Center and Egan Center. Now, at the request of the state, the Red Cross has begun transitioning residents into non-congregate sheltering — that is, hotel accommodations for longer-term stability.
