ST. CHARLES, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A St. Charles County councilmember is facing criticism after calling people who receive government benefits “just lazy people” in social media comments as millions across the country prepare to lose SNAP benefits at the end of this week due to the ongoing government shutdown.

Councilmember David Hammond made the comments on a Nextdoor post, writing in part: “...POOR KIDS GET SOCIAL SECURITY AND THEIR PARENTS GET FREE SECTION 8 HOUSING. THEY GET FREE FOOD FROM SNAP AND FOOD BANKS.”

He continued: “IF EVERYONE PULLED THEIR WEIGHT WE ALL WOULD BE BETTER OFF...”

Hammond doubled down in the comments section, saying: “THEY ARE JUST LAZY PEOPLE...”

Hammond declined to comment when contacted about his posts, saying he didn’t want to talk about it anymore.
