Longtime Washingtonville assistant football coach John Delgardo had the perfect candidate in mind when the Wizards’ head coaching position opened last year.

The contender was young, hard-working, knowledgeable, and a Washingtonville alum. However, his best attribute was that he was Delgardo’s beloved son, Joseph.

It didn’t take much for father to convince son to apply for the head coaching position, and the pair have helped put together one of the best stories in Section 9 this season. Washingtonville is 6-2 and plays Our Lady of Lourdes in the quarterfinals of the Class A playoffs at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
