DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) -- Two local state lawmakers are planning on carrying a constitutional amendment that would require all elected state constitutional officers to be natural-born U.S. citizens

Senator Donnie Chesteen from Geneva sponsored the bill, and Representative Rhett Marques from Enterprise agreed to carry it in the House.

Secretary of State Wes Allen called the proposed amendment the cornerstone of his legislative agenda for 20-26, calling natural-born citizens serving in government an "Alabama-first priority."

Current Alabama state law requires every elected seat to be occupied by people who have been U.S. citizens for varying numbers of years, the length of residency increasing with the level of governance.
