Warren — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan praised his performance among Detroit voters against a Democratic gubernatorial frontrunner in a recent poll, while he defended on Tuesday his school accountability plan against critics at a Macomb County campaign event.
Duggan, a longtime Democrat who is running for Michigan governor in 2026 as an independent, responded positively to a Detroit News-WDIV-TV (Channel 4) poll that showed 44% of likely Detroit voters saying they would support Duggan compared with 42% for Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and 2% for Republican U.S. Rep. John James of Shelby Township. In another scenario, Benson got 44% to Duggan's 42.5% and 3% for Republican former Attorney General Mike Cox of Livonia.
