CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Division of Fire confirms a man is dead after falling into the waters of Lake Erie and drowning while fishing near the Edgewater Pier.
Officials say rescue crews arrived at the scene just before 8:15 p.m. Tuesday after receiving word that the man had fallen by the rocks just east of the pier. Witnesses said he had been struggling in waves as high as 6 feet tall, and according to the fire department, he had already died by the time first responders got there.
Paramedics, Cleveland Metroparks police, and members of the U.S. Coast Guard attempted to assist firefighters in recovering the man's body. However, before they could do so, the remains were swept away by the waves. The search for the corpse has since been suspended due to "dangerous conditions" in the wat
