WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A rule that protects Kansans during winter months is about to go into effect.
The Cold Weather Rule starts on Nov. 1 and runs through Mar. 31. This rule helps Kansans who are behind on utility payments avoid disconnection during the winter. During this time period, utility companies cannot disconnect a customer’s natural gas, electric or water service when local temperatures are forecasted to drop below 35 degrees within a 48-hour period.
The rule also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan, allowing the customer to maintain or re-establish service. Any residential customer with a past due balance qualifies for payment arrangements, but it’s the customer’s responsibility to reach out and start that process.
