WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - The Wichita Animal Shelter and Kansas Humane Society are sharing ways the community can help with the overcrowding they’re experiencing.

With the current state of the economy, more pet owners are struggling to pay vet bills, food, and other expenses. This leads many owners to ultimately surrender their pets.

“People can’t afford to care for their pets. Part of that is rising food costs,” said Jordan Bani-Younes, the Director of Communications at Kansas Humane Society.

In just the month of September, the Wichita Animal Shelter took in around 900 animals.

“A little over 800 of those were never picked up by their owners, and so that leaves quite a few of them that end up abandoned,” said Emily Hurst, the Wichita Animal Shelter Manager.
