NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) -- Testimony began Tuesday in the civil trial involving Abigail Zwerner, a former Newport News elementary school teacher who was shot by her 6-year-old student while in the classroom.
The seven jurors and two alternates for the trial were selected late Monday, and they heard opening statements and started to hear evidence in the Jan. 6, 2023 shooting at Richneck Elementary School. It was a painful look back at the timeline of events that led up to the shooting there.
The $40 million negligence lawsuit alleges that then assistant principal, Ebony Parker, ignored warnings that the 6-year-old had a gun on the day of the shooting. The first-grader fired one shot, which went through
