A Wildwood Intermediate School student was arrested on Tuesday after making threatening statements in a group chat, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies arrested the boy after learning of the threatening messages. Another student in the group chat alerted a school official about the messages, who brought that information to the school resource officer.
The sheriff's office said the messages contained threats to kill a teacher and other students with guns.
The boy was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center and is being charged with written threats to kill.
Sumter County Sheriff Pat Breeden said, "This is another example of how we keep Sumter safe, by seeing something and saying something, it works."
