GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — After months of vocal opposition and grassroots organizing, Snellville residents secured a major victory Tuesday night as the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners voted to require a special use permit and a 1,000-foot buffer for any new funeral home or crematorium built in the county.

Residents who live near Centerville Highway have spent months pushing back against a proposed crematorium that would have been built just feet from their homes. Their efforts culminated in a packed commission meeting where they pleaded for change, emphasizing concerns over safety, transparency and property values.

“This isn’t about being anti-business,” one resident told commissioners. “It’s about being pro-community and pro-transparency.”
