WAIANAE (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Waianae family is in mourning after a tragic fishing accident over the weekend claimed the life of Maikah Hampp-Iriarte.

He had just turned 17 a month ago.

His older sister, Jaysha, spoke to him over FaceTime the night before he died.

“He was telling me that he was gonna go sleep over his best friend’s house, that he was going fishing the next day. I said, ‘Oh cool, OK.’ I said, ‘Be safe. I love you.’ He’s like, ‘OK, I will.’ And that was the last time I ever got to talk to him,” Jaysha Hampp-Iriarte said.

Maikah and his close friend, Tony Siafanua , were fishing on the rocks near Kaena Point Saturday when a wave swept one of them out.

The other jumped in to help, but they both were unable to safely get back to shore.
