ST. CLAIR SHORES – Looking up at the banners at St. Clair Shores South Lake, there’s not a ton of championships in terms of girls volleyball. And that varsity program goes back to the 1970s as its origin.
The Cavaliers finally added a year to the league championship banner this season.
South Lake finished 10-0 in the Macomb Area Conference Bronze Division this fall to become the school’s third league championship team in the sport and the first in some 26 years.
The last time the Cavaliers won a league title was back in the 1998-99 winter season – and when the sport was still a winter sport and under the side-out scoring system where a team had to have possession of the ball to score a point. Before that, one would have to go back to the 1989-1990 winter season over three decades ago.
