A man was arrested after allegedly using his cell phone to take pictures under a 13-year-old girl’s dress while she was shopping in a store aisle, Suffolk County police announced in a corrected release on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
The girl was browsing greeting cards in a Selden store on Saturday, Oct. 19, when the suspect bent down and used his phone to photograph beneath her dress, police said. Her father saw the incident, confronted the man, and the suspect ran off on foot, authorities said.
After an investigation by Sixth Squad detectives, officers arrested Aqeel Ahmad, 53, of College Road in Selden, inside his car near the intersection of College Road and Galaxie Lane around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, according to the release.
Ahmad was charged with Unlawful Surveillance in the Second Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, police said. He was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
Anyone with additional information or who believes they may have been victimized by Ahmad is urged to contact the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-220-TIPS, using the P3 Tips app, or visiting www.P3Tips.com.
Editor's Note: The police originally stated the child was filmed under a dressing room door but later issued a correction.
