State regulators approved LG&E and KU to build two new gas-fired power plant units in Jefferson and Mercer counties at a cost of nearly $3 billion, as the utilities prepare for future data center projects and forecasts of an unprecedented spike in electricity demand .

LG&E and KU, together forming the largest utility in the state, were also approved for $152 million in new emission controls at a coal-fired power plant in Carroll County, meant to keep the plant in operation by maintaining compliance with environmental standards. Regulators decided not to grant LG&E express permission to delay retirement of another coal-fired generating unit in Jefferson County as requested, but left the utility a pathway to do so.
