KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - The former treasurer of the Handley Fire Department is charged with one count of felony embezzlement.
According to a criminal complaint, between approximately January of 2022 and 2025, the Kanawha County Commission issued checks to the Handley Fire Department in excess of $120,000.
During this time, Robert Evans, 59, was treasurer.
Between January of 2023 and 2025, over $95,000 was withdrawn from multiple ATMs from the Handley Fire Department’s general account, the complaint said.
The criminal complaint states Evans was in possession of an unauthorized debit card for the fire department’s general account that all the transactions were made from.
After an initial investigation by law enforcement, it was found that Evans had deposited cash into his persona
