NEWPORT Ore. (KPTV) - An earthquake was reported Wednesday off the coast of Oregon, west of Newport around 6 a.m.
The earthquake was a 5.4 magnitude, according to a report by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at a depth of about 6.2 miles.
This area is seismically active and it’s not uncommon for earthquakes to be reported. There have been several reported quakes this year off the Oregon coast, which sits on the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a 700-mile long fault line.
Scientists predict there is a significant chance of a magnitude 9 or larger earthquake on this fault line in the next 50 years.
