Gov. Ron DeSantis is calling on Florida universities to stop giving out H-1B visas to hire international employees.

DeSantis said he wants the Florida Board of Governors ( BOG ) “to pull the plug” on the practice.

“We can do it with our residents in Florida or with Americans,” DeSantis said at a press conference at the University of South Florida . “And if we can’t do it, then man, we need to really look deeply about what is going on with this situation.”

DeSantis’ push would have the greatest effect on the University of Florida , USF and Florida State University . UF currently uses 156 H-1B visas — the fifth-most of any employer in the state — followed by USF with 72 and FSU with 69, according to data online from the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services.
