Gresham police and U.S. Marshals on Tuesday arrested a man who had fled in the middle of his sex-crimes trial earlier this month.
Sammy L. Cardoza, 57, appeared for the first day of the trial on Oct. 7 for a case where he faces charges of first-degree sodomy, first-degree unlawful sexual penetration and first-degree sexual abuse, court records show.
On the morning of Oct. 8 — before the second day of the trial — Cardoza took off his ankle monitor and disappeared, triggering a nationwide warrant for his arrest, the Gresham Police Department said in a statement.
Officials said at the time of his escape that he was believed to have fled the state, but police found him this week outside a residence near Southeast Steele Street and Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard in Portland.
