More than a year since its devastating destruction, WA’s beloved STS Leeuwin II has made its triumphant return to the very waters where its time was very nearly ended.

Standing dockside as WA’s only tall ship sailed back into Fremantle last Thursday afternoon was Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation CEO Lawson Dixon, who heralded the arrival as a “deeply emotional” moment to witness.

“Seeing the ship pop around the corner of South Mole and then following the tank coming in with the water arches … it really turned into a spectacle,” he said.

“It was a powerful reminder, after everything we’ve been through, of what we can overcome together.”

The training and adventure tall ship has been out of the water since May, undergoing significant repairs after an international container ship crashed
