NEWARK - Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will not be available on Nov. 1 because of the federal government shutdown.
The Trump administration recently notified New Jersey of the issue with SNAP, which formerly was the food stamp program, prompting New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin to join a 25-state coalition in suing the federal government on Wednesday for suspending SNAP benefits.
More than 800,000 New Jerseyans rely on SNAP for food security, which includes more than 120,000 Essex County residents, according to Essex County data.
