PEKIN, Ill ( 25News Now ) - The City of Pekin is having an informational town hall session regarding their current home rule after some residents raised concerns over its effectiveness and cost.
While there is currently no official proposal for a referendum to overturn the home rule, the city manager and staff will hold an informative presentation on home rule to the residents of Pekin. They will explain what it is, how it works, and its impact on the City’s authority.
Illinois municipalities are either home rule or non-home rule. When a town reaches a population over 25,000, it automatically becomes home rule. Pekin has been under home rule since the 1970s after reaching its 25,000 resident count benchmark.
