CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden said Wednesday that state leaders have asked his office to reopen a local juvenile detention center, but he wants the state to "invest in people" to help make it happen.
The North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice asked the sheriff's office to recruit, hire, and train the staff needed to reopen the facility, known as Jail North, according to a statement released by the sheriff's office. McFadden said the request would require hiring more than 40 detention officers and an estimated 20 support staff members to operate the state-mandated facility.
