LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Animal shelters across Mid-Michigan are growing concerned that the pause of SNAP Benefits may lead to a lack of resources and an increase in pet surrenders.
Financial strain is one of the main reasons people end up surrendering their pets to shelters.
“If we see a pause in SNAP benefits where people are unable to afford to buy pet food or take their pets to the vet, they may have to make that very difficult decision to surrender their pet,” Penny Myers, Director of Community Relations at the Capital Area Humane Society , said.
Myers says the shelter is here to help, but the more animals it takes in, the fewer resources it will have.
