President Donald Trump announced on social media that he has authorized South Korea to build a nuclear-powered submarine. This development will occur in the United States, as Trump disclosed during his Asia trip.

While meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and other regional leaders, Trump also revealed that South Korea has agreed to purchase significant amounts of U.S. oil and gas. The two leaders finalized details of a trade deal in a summit held in South Korea.

President Lee sought U.S. permission for South Korea to reprocess nuclear fuel to power its submarines, which would aid in tracking North Korean and Chinese vessels. Current agreements between the two nations prohibit such reprocessing without U.S. approval.
