SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — Gov. Dan McKee said Wednesday that state officials are examining Smithfield Public School over the district's widely criticized handling of an antisemitic hazing incident.
Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green is in contact with Smithfield Superintendent Dawn Bartz regarding what happened, McKee said.
Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island CEO Adam Greenman said his organization was told several football players barricaded a freshman student in a bathroom late last month, doused him with a spray bottle and shouted antisemitic slurs at him.
In a statement earlier this month, Bartz confirmed that the district's investigation found “inappropriate conduct among a small number of students.”
