PHOENIX — The Phoenix City Council has approved paying $5.2 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the family of a child injured by a police car in 2023.

On Oct. 29, the council voted 8-0 to approve a settlement for a civil case filed after a juvenile was struck by a Phoenix police vehicle near 11th Avenue and Pima Street on June 7, 2023.

According to the lawsuit, the child was in the roadway in front of his grandmother's house as the police car approached. Another child signaled to the approaching police car to warn that the other child was in the roadway.

The officer failed to yield and hit the child. Investigating officers reportedly concluded the officer was "traveling faster than the posted speed limit in a residential area at the time of the crash," according to the lawsuit.
