YouTube is rolling out several updates to improve how videos look and perform on TV screens.
Creators will soon be able to upload 4K-quality thumbnails, as the platform raises its file size limit from 2MB to 50MB, allowing sharper, more detailed preview images. With 4K televisions essentially the norm, this move makes sense to match image quality.
The company is also testing AI-powered video upscaling to automatically improve older or lower-quality uploads. The feature starts by upgrading standard-definition (SD) videos — such as 360p and 480p — to high-definition (HD) resolutions like 720p and 1080p. YouTube says it plans to extend this technology to support upscaling all the way to 4K in the future.
