DILLON COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Dillon County food pantry is ready to help families in need as hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians are at risk of losing their benefits this weekend.
Gov. Henry McMaster this week activated the Central Carolina Community Foundation's One SC Fund and directed the South Carolina State Guard to assist food banks ahead of Nov. 1, when SNAP benefits are set to freeze.
An estimated 260,000 residents across the state are expected to be impacted.
Teresa Mason, director of Helping Hands, has overseen assistance to nearly 250 families up to 14 days a month. Normally, they see an uptick in applicants this time of year, but with SNAP benefits on the line, she worries about the added challenge.
