WEAVERVILLE - Millions of cubic yards of debris have been removed from Western North Carolina's rivers after Tropical Storm Helene, yet the remaining debris generated by the storm is in hard-to-reach areas. One Asheville-based nonprofit is whitewater rafting in to remove it, and it'll soon expand to eastern Tennessee.

MountainTrue is now expanding its River Debris Cleanup Program efforts in WNC to Tennessee, enabling it to chase debris washed out of the region and into other states. MountainTrue has aided in removing 4 million pounds of debris from the region's rivers since Helene. The U.S. Army Corps estimates the storm generated a total of 9.4 million cubic yards of debris.
