For the first time in nine years, the Fox Chapel Foxes can call themselves WPIAL champions once again.
The No. 2 seeded Foxes upset the No. 1 seeded Peters Township Indians in the Class 2A title game on Wednesday at North Allegheny, 2-0.
For a moment, the shutout victory was denied – but a late fourth-quarter goal from Indians junior forward Eliza Muehlbauer was called off by the officials. There was 2:40 on the clock when the call was made.
Fox Chapel coach Kellee Cribby said that the officials told her there were too many players in the circle.
With or without the Indians’ goal, the Foxes claimed victory. Cribby said that the victory was special, especially with the Foxes having a chip on their shoulder and wanting to prove their strength.
